Research is an important part of DIGMA's mission to promote understanding of the design industry and develop effective policy and program initiatives. DIGMA's is currently working with Mt. Auburn Associates, an economic development strategy and planning firm on initial research on the Massachusetts design sector.

To promote understanding of the design industry and develop effective policy and program initiatives.

The first phase of work defined the industry, created a framework for understanding its structure, and collected and analyzed quantitative data that will enable DIGMA to track industry changes over time. The next phase, using more qualitative methods, will explore design's economic relationship with and impact on other industries.

While DIGMA will undertake its own research as needed, it also hopes to serve as clearinghouse and forum for design research conducted by scholars and specialists throughout the Commonwealth. In so doing, the Massachusetts design community will have access to a collaborative community of research that will be an important tool in advancing the Commonwealth's design economy.
